Rainforest Station is OPEN!!!

THE STORE IS FINALLY OPEN!!!!!.

We still have a few things coming in, but we opened the doors Monday, September 15.

We have a great selection of Exo Terra products, including the new 36-inch terrariums; live tropical plants including bromeliads, orchids, and tilandsias (some in bloom); lots of dart frogs ranging from Dendrobates azureus to Phyllobates aurotaenia; and everything else you might need to build a terrarium or vivarium. Heck, we’ll even build one for you!

To celebrate this milestone, for a limited time we are offering a 20% discount off list price on all Exo Terra terrariums!

Please stop by: 6248 28th St. SE, in Grand Rapids. It’s about a mile east of the I-96/28th St. interchange. We’re open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Security Certificate Issue Corrected!

WHEW!!! After an entire weekend of combing through the PHP script and updating all the links (heck, I didn’t even know what a relational link was until I had to fix this problem!) I think I’ve solved our security certificate problem with the on-line store.

But, if you’ve already bookmarked the storefront, you’ll have to change the URL to stop getting the error. Just click on the On-Line Store button at the top of this post, and it will give take the correct route to the store to avoid the error, and then re-bookmark it.

We are gearing up for fall with a couple new offerings that we will be talking more about in the next couple weeks, so keep an eye on the news page. We’ve also added the Lansing Reptile and Exotic Animal Show to our schedule, Saturday, May 24, so if you’re in the area, please stop by to say “Hi.”

On-Line Store is Up and Running!!!

Well, we’ve learned more about PHP scripting than we ever wanted to know, but we finally got the on-line store up and running.

The site is on an SSL server, but it is a shared SSL certificate belonging to our ISP, so you may get a certificate error when you sign on. Don’t worry, it’s secure. We are working with our ISP to get our own SSL certificate in the near future.

We decided not to wait until we had all of our products on the site before going live, so keep an eye out as we add to our catalog of high-quality amphibian merchandise.

We also have a few “tweaks” needed to completely customize the store, and will work on those as we progress. If you notice any problems with the site, please let us know on our contact page. Even if you don’t notice problems, please feel free to let us know how you like it.

January shows bring date, location changes

The new year is bringing a new date for the Kalamazoo Reptile Show and a new location for the West Michigan Reptile Show in Grand Rapids.

The Kalamazoo Reptile Show is earlier this month, on January 5. The West Michigan Reptile Show in Grand Rapids is still on the second Sunday, January 13, but is moving to the Howard Johnson conference center on 28th street, just east of the U.S. 131 exit. This facility is at ground level, so no more stairs to climb (especially nice if you buy one of our naturalistic terrarium kits).

Below is an example of the kind of water feature you can design with our kits, using our Hydroton clay drainage material, which is a fraction of the weight of gravel.

This month we have added two new frogs, but I haven’t had a chance to photograph them yet for the web site: Tiger-Leg Monkey Tree Frogs, and Clown Tree Frogs. These amazing guys have (respectively) bright orange and black stripes on their legs, or are a beautiful maroon with yellow spots.

We still have our captive-bred baby Red-Eyed Tree Frogs, our Vietnam Blue Tree Frogs, Green Tree Frogs, and captive-bred Oriental Fire-Bellied Toads. We’ll also have all the goodies to go along with our terrarium kits: coco huts, coconut panels (great for backgrounds), grape vine, driftwood, live plants, submersible filters, heat cables and all that great stuff.

And, of course we will have our fruit fly cultures as Blaptica dubia roaches – adults and nymphs. These guys are one of the best feeders on the market, and have the highest meat-to-shell ratio of any feeder insects.

We look forward to seeing everybody at the shows in January!

Kalamazoo Reptile Show added!

We’ve added the Kalamazoo Reptile Show on December 15 to this month’s schedule. So, if you can’t catch us at the West Michigan Reptile Expo in Grand Rapids December 9, you have another chance to see us.
I haven’t had a moment to spare in preparing for these shows, so I apologize that the photos in this post are not our specific animals, but hopefully after these next two weekends, I’ll have a chance to set up the photo studio for new frog photos.
We just received some great new frogs for the December shows, including Red-eyed Tree Frogs:
These captive-bred babies are about 1/2″ long and cute as all get-out. They are eating fruit flies, preferrably D. hydei, but most could probably tackle pinheads as well. We are going to be offering a special price when you buy two of these cuties.
We also received some “Vietnam Blue Tree Frog” specimens. They definitely look like Polypedates, but we are having a bit of trouble tracking down the exact species. They could seem to be somewhere between P. dennysi:
and P. chenfui:
If you think the blue phase Australian White’s are blue, you should see these guys! They vary (depending on mood?) between powder blue and turquoise, and are about an inch long. They are gobbling up size 2.5 crickets like there’s no tomorrow. I haven’t had time to calculate exact price, but they will probably retail for about $45.

We’ll also have some marbled, golden, and a tokay gecko with really low prices; plenty of fruit fly cultures; more Blaptica dubia nymphs and adult pairs, as well as food, water gel, and roach flats; springtail colonies; the frogs mentioned in our previous post, and a ton of cage furnishings, including grapevine, eucalyptus root driftwood, and driftwood stumps; submersible filters; hydroton (great for a light-weight drainage layer); and our special long-lasting substrate mixture that’s perfect for naturalistic frog vivariums.

I hope we can fit everything on two tables …
